Mike does offer a fine point about the focal plane shutter, but there =
shouldn't be a rush to condemn it. Think "barrel Lens" before you =
decide. They're usually cheaper (they're lenses without shutters for =
those who wonder), easier to adapt and can yield some interesting =
results. I have several smaller Protars that live on the front of my =
4x5 Pacemaker Speed.
Also, unless you're committed to rollfilm, you can save a buck or =
two by getting a non-Grafloc back on a Speed or Crown. BUT, my own =
personal favorite is a Super Speed as there are movements if you want, =
revolving back, very rigid construction. Stephen Gandy's site =
http://cameraquest.com/ has a very in-depth review and comparison to =
Linhof Technikas. The Graphics are a wonderfully stout and useable =
bunch of cameras. Try one, you'll love it.

Jonathan,
I got a Crown Graphic 2x3 a few months ago (wanted to stay with 120 =
film) -- and what got me started was the discussion on this list about =
the coated Ektar lenses. Having shot a few ;) roles of film with it, I =
can confirm that that's one great lens (at f11 and smaller -- for =
landscapes). The main difference between the Crown Graphic and the Speed =
Graphic is that the latter also has a focal plane shutter (which adds =
weight, and probably something else that can break on a 50+ year old =
camera). The Crown Graphic (only) has the leaf shutter on the lens.

I'm finding myself doing quite a bit of 4x5 portraiture and I'm =
tired of lugging a Linhof Kardan around, so I'm thinking about picking =
up a Crown Graphic. With so many years of wisdom represented on this =
list, I though I'd fish for some recommendations about what to get. If =
anyone can help me determine which model, which features, and most =
importantly, which lens, I'd be grateful.
Thanks,
Jonathan Prescott
