A barrel lens is usually the optics mounted in a metal tube without a
shutter.  Usually they do  have a diaphragm.

How hard or easy to mount in a shutter depends on the specific lens.  In
some cases you can just unscrew the front and rear components from the
barrel and screw them into a shutter.  In other cases you'll need the
services of a good precision machine shop.
