I'd suggest getting on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Luray, Virginia, and
taking it south. Lots of great stuff to photograph along the way.
The other option would be to take I 66 west from DC to old US Route 11
and follow it down through the Shenandoah Valley. Lots of interesting
little towns along the way. I make this trip in reverse, starting at
the southern end of the valley and ending up in Strassburg where my
wife and I love to stay at the old Hotel Strassburg and dine in their
This whole area will be busy on that weekend, though, since it is the
peak of the tourist season. So be prepared.
Another option is the Canaan Valley in West Virginia.
